There's no big trade-off in H/V mills. You gain considerable versatility in fact. One bad trade-off Grizzly made is when they decided to use an R-8 spindle in the horizontal spindle. An R-8 spindle config has limited driving torque whereas the 40 milling taper it replaced could drive up to 6" x 1/2" stagger tooth cutters almost to hub depth.
